Sara Khan is a Histopathology Research Assistant in ProCan at Children's Medical Research Institute. She is studying her Bachelor of Medical Science in the University of Technology Sydney, majoring in Medical and Health Related Sciences.
Her role in the ProCan pathology team involves sub-sampling both frozen and formalin-fixed-paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues by collecting thin (ten micron) sections of each sample into a small tube for the Proteomics team and on a glass slide for pathology review through digital scanning. The slides are then stained, which helps in comparing the histopathological features of each sample with proteomic profiles by visualising the tissue composition. The sectioned samples are also recorded into the LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) database for the tracking of samples.
