18th-22nd November 2024
This one-week, hands-on program gives Year 10, 11 and 12 High School students, especially in Western Sydney, a unique opportunity to do real science in a real lab—no experience necessary!
Even if you never studied biology before or never enjoyed your previous classes, we will change all that.
Be amazed by the world within our own bodies—cells. This program will teach you how to use a microscope and prepare cells for study. It will teach you the basics of scientific experimentation and open a world of possibility.
Studying science can lead to a career in research or medicine—one day, you could be the first to discover something new or find a treatment that saves lives.
We want to encourage local students, no matter their past opportunities or lack of opportunities, to pursue further education and careers in science. Great thinkers who have changed the world often come from the humblest beginnings. You can do this.
Three places are available in this year’s program. You will receive a certificate of completion and letter of recommendation at the end of your one-week work experience, with work dates to be determined in consultation with you and your school.
"I am so grateful for being given the opportunity and enjoyed every moment of it. In a school setting us students don’t hear much about scientific research, in terms of how important and impactful it is on future medicine. I would highly recommend this to other students who have an interest in science because it truly does allow you to get hands on and learn how the process occurs. The Stem Cell team and staff at CMRI were all so kind and welcoming, I can’t thank them all enough for their advice and enthusiasm towards teaching me some skills."
"I had so much fun and gained valuable insight into life in the lab! I found the Stem Cell Academy very fascinating and fun. Over the course of the week, we cultivated organoids and at the end, we got to view them under a microscope. I learnt a lot of things and because of this program, I am more motivated to pursue a career in science."
