Patti Payne retires from CMRI Board

After more than 20 years of service, much-loved Children’s Medical Research Institute Board member Patti Payne OAM has decided to retire – but she won’t be far away.

Mrs Payne’s association with CMRI began in 1968 when her fourth child Judith died at the age of six months due to a genetically related condition. She became aware of CMRI’s work when it was based in the grounds of the Children’s Hospital at Camperdown, and decided she wanted to help.

In 1969, Mrs Payne joined CMRI’s Beecroft Fundraising Committee and later became president.

It was in 1991 that Mrs Payne and her friends established The Hills Fundraising Committee, where she is still president. They have had many successful events, but their Mothers’ Luncheon has become the highlight of their fundraising year.

“In 2000, we held our first Mothers’ Luncheon and, while not neglecting our other functions, this has become our major focus,’’ Mrs Payne said. “We invite a celebrity mother to be our guest, and she is not asked to make a speech but is interviewed by my good friend John Mangos for the entertainment of the attendees. Over the years, we have had many major celebrities and to name just a few there has been Dame Marie Bashir, Maggie Tabberer, and Lady Lyn Cosgrove.’’

“Each of these Luncheons, at which we have had up to 600 guests, has been a social and financial success. Not only has the amount raised been significant, but I also believe that they have been responsible for raising the profile of CMRI in the community.’’

It was also in 2000 that Mrs Payne joined CMRI’s Board, which she said she is leaving with some regret.

“But I know it will benefit from fresh ideas, and I will of course continue my work with the Hills Committee and continue to help CMRI in any way that I can.’’

CMRI Board President Professor Frank Martin paid tribute to Mrs Payne.

“It has been a privilege to have someone of Patti Payne’s calibre on the CMRI Board, and I’m grateful that she will continue her long association with us through her role on our Hills Fundraising Committee,’’ Professor Martin said. “Mrs Payne has been a great asset, offering her experience as a parent, medical professional and fundraiser with an unwavering dedication and passion to the future of medical research.’’

Mrs Payne asked CMRI supporters to put Friday 5th May in their calendar for her next Mothers’ Luncheon at The Hilton in 2023.
